It's the beginning of a new era in the Canadian music industry as E1 Music Canada (formerly KOCH Entertainment) celebrates its inaugural run at the 2009 JUNO Awards with four big nominations in the R&B and Rap categories, not to mention the induction of LOVERBOY (Rockstar Music/E1 Music Canada) into the JUNO HALL OF FAME. The awards show airs on CTV on Sunday, March 29 from General Motors Place in Vancouver, BC.
"This is a great way to kick off the branding of E1 Music," said a jubilant Dominique Zgarka, President of E1 Music Canada. "We're extremely proud of all our great artists and wish to extend a big round of congratulations to these four amazing acts in particular."
MORE ABOUT THE ARTISTS
DEBORAH COX No overnight sensation, Deborah Cox has been performing since the age of twelve, beginning with talent shows in her native Scarborough. She's come a long way since then—earning a Grammy nomination, an American Music Awards nomination, hitting #1 on the Billboard Chart, taking home three JUNOs and earning an additional four nominations (not including this one), to name just a few of her accolades & achievements. Her first single off The Promise, "Beautiful U R" was a Top 3 hit and certified Gold in digital sales. And, just weeks before the JUNOs take place, Deborah will be awarded an even greater honour—that's the due date for her new baby.
ELISE ESTRADA Elise's first-ever JUNO nod comes off even sweeter seeing as how this year's awards are taking place in her hometown, Vancouver. It's a remarkable time for the 21-year-old, what with the release of her self-titled debut last September, a summer tour with 50 Cent, and a winning streak of chart-topping, dance-floor filling singles: "Unlove You," "Insatiable," "Ix-Nay," "These 3 Words," and "Crash & Burn," while the latest, "Poison" just hit radio this week. Judging by her brief but impressive track record, it looks like we'll have another hit on our hands very soon.
FAMOUS He was a shoe salesman then. He raps now. He said good-bye to the 9-to-5 then. He's looking at taking home at JUNO now. Say hello to Famous, a former record company intern turned (alleged) Def Jam/Jay Z ghostwriter, Kardinall Offishall collaborator, and rising rapper in his own right. His nominated EP, thematically inspired by his journey from employee of minimum wage to rhymesayer who's all the rage, has been turning heads and opening ears in a stellar fashion. Looks like Famous had pretty good foresight in choosing his MC moniker.
POINT BLANK Toronto's O.G.s (that's original geniuses, natch), are finally getting the right kind of attention (as opposed to that provided by T.O's finest, a previous concern thanks to the, er, misplaced enthusiasm the group's seven members occasionally displayed in their younger days). Their gritty anthems about coming in Regent Park, Canada's largest and oldest housing project, has found them covered by top tier media as diverse as Urbanology Magazine (cover story), The National Post (a five-page spread, no less) the Toronto Star (front page of the Entertainment section), Now Magazine, EYE Weekly, Much Music, MTV Canada, Global National News, and even the CBC's flagship news program, The National, while their singles "God Only Knows" and Born and Raised in the Ghetto" have been burning up on top of the charts.
